The Volunteer position is a critical element of the functioning of the Library and is intended to be a rewarding experience for both the volunteer and the Library. Volunteers must be 18 or older (with few exceptions) and fill out our screening application. As of Aug. 26, 2015, all applications must be submitted online.
Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Huntsville Public Library. Volunteers are used on an "as-needed" basis.

Children's Department Volunteer - Help the Children's Coordinator with preparing for weekly Story Hour and other children's programs by researching and creating crafts, assisting with book selection, creating fliers, and other tasks. We need a creative individual who is committed to ensuring that the library is sufficiently prepared for the many children's programs we offer. The ideal candidate would begin volunteering immediately and commit to coming in a few hours each week.
General Operations Volunteer - The library is in need of a volunteer to complete various ongoing tasks as they arise. These tasks may include newspaper and magazine upkeep, filing, other clerical tasks, shifting books, book sale upkeep, and other tasks as assigned. The ideal candidate to fill this position would begin immediately and commit to coming in a few hours each week.
Adult Literacy Tutor - Tutors are needed to help other adults learn to read or improve English-speaking skills. Prospective tutors are required to complete three online training modules. Upon completion of the training, new tutors are matched with a student. Tutors meet with students at least two hours per week. College education and/or the ability to speak a foreign language are not required to volunteer as a tutor.
Genealogy Volunteer - Members of the Walker County Genealogical Society assist persons visiting the Dickenson Genealogy Room with their family history search. This is a continuous position that always requires volunteers.
Shelving / Shelf-Reading Volunteer - Help put books, movies, and CDs back on the shelf and ensure all materials are in their proper place. Alphabetization skills, attention to detail, and willingness to learn different classification systems are required. This is a continuous position that always requires volunteers.
Cataloging Volunteer - Work with our cataloger: cover and stamp books, prepare and attach book jackets, apply spine labels, make changes to catalog records, and other tasks as needed. Attention to detail, good reading skills, an affinity for arts and crafts, and basic computer skills are desired.
